Fish for Your Future

Pelagic Fisheries

Working at sea provides skills for future careers

The crew of our pelagic freezer trawlers are key to our ongoing contribution to sustainable and healthy food security. Our fishers share a passion for the sea and are committed to providing nutritious food for others.

Being a fisher is more than just a job; it’s like joining a second family. In this tight-knit community, young professionals acquire essential skills and personal competences that are of great value for their future careers, both at sea and on land.

Freezer trawlers spend weeks out at sea and need crew that perform highly specialised tasks in challenging situations, requiring 100% professionalism.

Strong discipline is an important trait of fishers as they need to work in line with strict timetables and be ready to act swiftly when opportunities arise. For example, when the right shoals of fish are found. This discipline extends to all tasks in this process, which must be performed to the best of one’s ability: from the fishing deck where hauling the net must be done quickly and safely, to the processing area where one must ensure the optimal quality of the fish by sorting, freezing, packaging and storing.

This type of work requires not only discipline and resilience, but also close teamwork and cooperation among the crew. Each member plays a crucial role in ensuring that operations run effectively, relying on trust and effective communication to deal with unexpected situations that can happen at sea. Because of the structured environment, the crew understands what is expected of them: strict adherence to sustainability and safety protocols are the starting points for an optimal result. The hierarchy of different ranks onboard is there to drive and monitor the operation successfully.

Working onboard a fishing vessel allows our crew to fuel their careers and achieve fast and continuous personal growth, working one’s way up to positions with more responsibilities.

Fishers therefore not only have the potential to grow within the fisheries sector, but work at sea lays the foundation for a bright future across the whole maritime sector – while enjoying the challenging but awe-inspiring life at sea.

That is why the PFA contributes to various projects, like Turning Blue, in which we share our knowledge and experience, and try to enthuse people about working on board our freezer trawlers. Both people who are at the start of their careers as well as people looking to make a career switch, either from inside or outside the maritime industry.

The journey of working at sea is full of opportunities, with tides turning into gateways for growth and success.
